Man did I have an experience this weekend. Bringing the Vette home I was lucky to get within a mile or two of the house when the left brake caliper started locking up enough to really over heat the rotor. I mean really over heat. I was sitting at the light where I turn & the caliper literally exploded. I was able to get to the house & had to take a water hose on it quick as the flud had a little fire coming from the hose area. It took what seemed like five minutes to get it cool enough that when I removed the water & put it back on it didn't hiss from the steam. The liner was completely rubbed off the backing plate & the pistons were just hanging out. You could tell the pistons had almost melted. I was able to get the cailper off & go buy a new one from the local parts house. More on that trip later,,,, so all seemed be working well enough to head out to the local car show. The next day I needed to get the car back to the hanger & the right side started acting up. It was fairly new with only about 200 miles on it that side. Heck I've only put about 200 miles since I've owned the car. So,,, what the heck can cause all this??? I replaced both right side when I bought the car as they were not working at all,,,now I've replaced the left front. Can the proportioning valve be the problem??? A hose maybe??? Why would new cailpers lock up from the heat generated during braking? Seems when I brake they don't release freely. I'm stumped I'm stumn

I had a the front wheel lock up like that one time after my 71 had been sitting for a long period of time. I thought it was a caliper issue. turns out the hose had collapsed and was acting like a check valve. Try replacing your brake hoses.

I agree. Go ahead and replace all the hoses on your car. Some nice new braided stainless from Vette Brakes are what I put on mine when I did the brakes several years ago.

What's even more fun is driving on the interstate around 80mph while towing your boat and a brake hose bursts and peddle hits the floor, luckily the driver command center advised me that there was a problem with the brakes

I agree with the brake hose diagnosis but I would also stay away from those cheap auto parts store calipers. Buy some good stainless sleeved calipers. Most of the time when you buy from one of the mega parts distributors, the part will be defective, especially rebuilt parts.

You guys are right about the auto parts store calipers. I have replaced the right side & now the left front. The left rear is next. Replacing the left front I went to the parts house twice. The first one bought leaked at the split seam while bleeding the brakes. The second one worked out okay. They are stainless lined though & have worked pretty good & come with a life time warrantee. NOT much good if you total your ride. I also had to replace the hose,,fire does something to them to make um weak I've been looking on VBP's site but haven't come across the braided lines. Probably because I see all those other shiny I want objects LOL. I need to replace the rotors this time around & the master cylinder. VBP has them cheaper than the parts house but I'm not sure what shipping will be. I'll keep you all up to date. I may can get it done this next weekend.

One thing you might want to check just for kicks on those new calipers is the torque between the caliper halves. This may have been the reason for the leaks you were experiencing. http://www.vbandp.com/instructions/torque%20specs.pdfThe halves for the front need to be torqued to 130 ft. lbs. The halves for the rears need to be torqued to 60 ft. lbs.

I'm stumped I'm stumn I have read that if the parking brake comes off of it's adjusters, it can jam the brakes and cause similar problems. Had you worked on the parking brakes prior to this?

Nope I hadn't worked on those before but thier coming. I've got it up on jack stands & really giving the underside a good cleaning. I think tomorrow I'll take her back down & head to the car wash. There's a ton of caked on dirt under there,,,its not fun eating oily dirt anymore But I'm enjoying every minute. I call working on my car "Going to my nothing box" I can work on it for hours without stress. Kinda like being in a nothing box, just let the mind wander where ever it wants to go
