How much heat is acceptable on fiberglass side exhaust covers. I just installed them and they are real close to the fiberglass when you figure how hot those pipes get so I used two inch header wrap and stapled them together side by side with a total of four strips and held on with gear clamps just to insure it would help to keep the heat away from the fiberglass. I started it up and went for a two mile ride and touched the covers to see if they were getting warm. They seemed pretty warm and the paint which was only a few days old seemed to be a little soft from the heat, although it didn't seem to hurt it yet. Just wondering how hot to the touch your covers get. I don't know if I should be concerned  of just run it. Anyone experiencing excess heat ?

I raised the covers up just a bit and now it seems to get a lot more air moving accross the pipes. Seems to be a lot cooler on the covers.

I know on my 70, there is no hood liner and it is painted black on top of that. There are times that I am sure the hood would be painful to touch when it is nice, sunny and hot out side. I have never measured the temps but so far the hood is holding up well. I would think that the fiberglass covers should be pretty good too unless they are touching the pipes. Then I would do something to get me some clearance from the pips. Sounds like you are on the right track by raising the covers just a hair so so.

As long as you have a little air flow you should be fine. It's just like having a slight gap between your plug wires and headers. As long as they don't touch, you'll be fine.

When I bought my covers from Allens Exhaust he said to use a heat shield that he had. I put it on the inside of the pipes and have had no problem for 3-4 years.
