Start by soaking the inside of the pipes with some good penetrating oil (NOT Wd-40). Soak them down everyday for about a week from both ends. I put a 2x12 on the floor and started dropping the open end of the pipe on it. Took a long time just dropping it on that board, but they finally did come out. Other than that, after you soak them real good, you might be able to set the open end of the pipe on a board and stick a long bar down the pipe from the top and maybe drive them out whith a hammer. Might also help to use a heat gun on the outside of the pipe- warm it up a little. good luck

Ol' Red has had sidepipes since it was built-first the factory side exhaust- the Hookers came along in '71- and the ones on there now are set #3. #1 rusted out, I pulled #2 in favor of the JetHot Sterling ones that are on there now. I have no complaints- you do have to be very aware of that real hot pipe right outside the door when you get out. I make my wife stay in the car until I get around to open the door and throw a towel over the pipe. I have STS Baffles too. Low restriction, and not really loud until you get it on. Right now, I'm running no baffles- and yes, it's really loud all the time. Zero problems with header gaskets. When I install them, I tighten them down, and then everytime I shut it off I tighten them again for a couple of weeks, then just start checking the bolts when I'm doing something under the hood.

I don't think there's anything you can do that will keep them from getting hot. The ceramic coating helps insulate them, but it's really more for performance than keeping the outside of them cool. Keeping the exhaust hot keeps it moving faster so it flows better, and adds some protection so they don't rust. bangkokdean at www.steelshields.com has some really nice stainless covers if you want to go that way.
