I'm currently doing a frame off on my 82 and planning for reassembly.  Lately I've been thinking about the interior, the C1 cars didn't have consoles.  In my opinion the console in the C3 is ugly, takes up too much room, is uncomfortable and gets beat to death when people flop in and climb out.  Has anyone completely removed the console, relocated the parking brake to the door sill like the C4, relocated the heat/air controls to the dash and covered the hump with carpet?

It seems to me that a manual shifter with a clean boot and chrome trim ring on a carpeted hump would really clean up the interior.  Just asking if anyone has any info, or possibly a picture or two.

Here's an example of a C1 with no console:
