It looks like the engine in the About.com project Corvette may be terminally ill.

And that's a good excuse to buy a crate motor - so, what do you all think?

GM apparently has a 260 HP 350 engine - new block and all - for about $1600.

Or I could have mine rebuilt locally for about $1200 - but I wonder if that would just
give me a 180-horse L-48 again?

I don't need huge horsepower, but something punchy would be nice. I like the sound
of 260-horse.

So, anyone have good or bad experiences with crate engines?

If you buy a crate engine, or any engine for that matter, make sure you get it from a dealer or company that has a warranty. Buying from ebay or craigslist can be a gamble if they don't stand by their work.
