I am thinking of taking the insulation off of the hood on my '73 and painting the underside. I think it will look cleaner and match my new, detailed and dressed up engine. Are there any pitfalls or problems I should look out for?

Sand it smooth and paint it any way you want. You have a wide open pallet.

I'd think twice before removing the stock under hood insulation. First it was put there to prevent the heat from the engine compartment from deteriorating the paint on the surface of the hood. Excessive heat will cause the color to change. If your car is totaling stock or restored, the engine compartment receive all the heat from the manifolds as well as the rejected heat from the radiator. Secondly, the amount of work to do this project correctly, is many long days, just not a weekend. When you go to remove the insulation clips you will find that they will take part of the fiberglass with each one. Thats means expertly filling and sanding so it does not appear that there where once there. You will also to paint successfully between the hood and cowl air diverter, this is a very tight space and it was never meant to be painted. If was I that was thinking about the project, I would buy replacement insulation remove all the hardware, including the cowl inlet damper assembly, clean the under side of the hood and reinstall all the parts. It will look a hell of a lot nicer than some paste on decal, and remain stock. Only my 2 cents after 40+ years of car in the blood syndrome.

These are good thoughts. Since I will need to paint the car in the future anyway, and I live in a moderate climate, I might give the removal a try and see. I can always replace it later and its pretty ratty looking now! I imagine if I rip out the insulation, I can cut the clips so as to prevent damage and allow reinstallation later. Any thoughts?
